Smog check FAQ
Everything drivers ask us.
Straight answers about test-only smog checks, STAR certification, pricing, DMV registration, California smog rules and what to do if you fail.
Getting a smog check
How much is a smog check in Lake Forest?
$49.75 for most 2000 & newer cars, plus the $8.25 state certificate when your vehicle passes. Older cars, diesels, trucks, vans, SUVs and motor homes are a little more — see the coupon for the full breakdown, or call (949) 454-9676.
Do I need an appointment?
No — walk in Monday through Saturday. See the header and footer for current hours.
How long does a smog check take?
About 15 minutes for most vehicles. Arrive with a warmed-up engine for the best result.
What vehicles do you test?
All of them — gas, diesel, hybrid, trucks, vans, SUVs, RVs and motor homes — for every DMV reason.
What do I need to bring?
Just your vehicle and your DMV renewal notice if you have it. It helps us confirm exactly what the DMV is asking for.
Can I pay cash?
Yes. The $49.75 coupon price is our cash price. Ask us about other payment options when you arrive.
Pricing & vehicles
Why do older cars cost more?
Vehicles from 1996 and older use a different, more involved tailpipe test, so they’re priced at our regular rate rather than the $49.75 coupon price.
Do you smog diesels?
Yes. Diesel vehicles are tested for every DMV reason, with a small add-on over the base price.
Do you test trucks, vans and SUVs?
Yes — larger vehicles like trucks, vans and SUVs are a little extra over the coupon price because they take more setup.
Do you smog motor homes and exotic cars?
We do. Motor homes and exotic cars carry an additional charge, as they take more time and care to test.
What does “cover removal” mean?
Some vehicles need an access panel or cover removed to reach the test port. When that’s required there’s a small extra charge for the labor.
What is the $8.25 certificate fee?
It’s the state’s certificate fee, collected only when your vehicle passes and its certificate is filed electronically with the DMV.
Test-only & STAR
What is a test-only station?
A station licensed only to inspect vehicles, not repair them. There’s no repair upsell, so the result is unbiased. Gross polluters can be certified here too.
What is a STAR station?
A smog station the DMV monitors closely and holds to higher Bureau of Automotive Repair standards. If your renewal says STAR, you’re in the right place.
Why did the DMV send me to a STAR station?
The DMV directs a share of vehicles to STAR stations for registration renewal. Only a STAR station can certify those vehicles — we can.
What’s the difference between a test-only and a regular station?
A regular test-and-repair station can both test and fix vehicles. A test-only station only inspects and certifies, which keeps the result impartial.
Can you certify a gross polluter?
Yes. As a STAR test-only station we can inspect and certify gross polluters and other DMV-directed vehicles.
If you fail
What happens if my vehicle fails?
We’ll explain exactly why and what needs repair. Once it’s fixed, bring it back for a retest, and you may qualify for repair help through the Consumer Assistance Program.
What happens at the retest?
Bring the car back once it’s repaired and the readiness monitors have reset. We re-run the STAR inspection and certify it the moment it passes.
What is the Consumer Assistance Program (CAP)?
If your vehicle fails a Smog Check at a test-only station, you may qualify for up to $500 toward repairs, or $1,000 to retire a high-polluting vehicle. Check the Bureau of Automotive Repair website for eligibility.
My check engine light is on — will I pass?
No. An illuminated check engine light is an automatic fail on any OBD-II vehicle. Have it diagnosed and repaired first.
What are readiness monitors?
They’re self-tests your vehicle runs as you drive. If too many aren’t “ready” — often after a battery disconnect or cleared codes — the vehicle can’t be tested until they complete.
DMV registration
Can you handle my registration too?
Yes. As a DMV registration partner we can process your registration once your smog passes — renewals, out-of-state and change-of-ownership.
I’m new to California — what do I need?
An out-of-state vehicle needs a California smog to register. Bring the vehicle and your paperwork and we’ll do the smog and the registration together.
Do I need a smog to sell my car?
A change-of-ownership generally requires a smog. We can test and certify, then help with the title-related registration.
Can you renew my registration on the spot?
In most cases, yes — once your smog passes we can complete the registration right here, so you leave with it handled.
California smog rules
How often do I need a smog check?
Most vehicles need one every two years for registration renewal, plus whenever you buy or sell, or bring a car in from out of state.
Are new cars exempt?
Gasoline vehicles are exempt for their first eight model years. After that, they’re due at each two-year renewal.
Do you smog hybrids and electric cars?
Hybrids need a smog like any gas vehicle. Fully electric vehicles don’t require a Smog Check at all.
Are older or classic cars exempt?
Gasoline vehicles from 1975 and earlier are exempt. Diesel rules differ — call us and we’ll tell you what applies to yours.
Which areas do you serve?
Drivers from Lake Forest, Mission Viejo, Laguna Hills, Aliso Viejo, Foothill Ranch and Laguna Woods.
Tips to pass
How can I help my car pass?
Drive it about 15 minutes first so the engine and catalytic converter are hot — a warm car burns cleaner.
Should I fix the check engine light before coming?
Yes. A lit check engine light fails the test, so have it addressed first.
Should I clear the codes before my test?
No. Clearing codes resets the readiness monitors, which fails the test until they run again. Just repair the issue and drive normally.
Does maintenance really matter?
It does. Regular oil changes and tune-ups, and never tampering with emissions equipment, are the surest way to pass.
